The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:1-12

And Jesus seeing the crowds, climbed up into a mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples approached him. And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after justice, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God. Blessed are those who suffer persecution on account of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak every evil word against you, untruly, on account of me. Rejoice, and exult, because your reward is copious in heaven. For so the prophets were persecuted, who came before you.
