John is questioned

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent forth to him, out of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites, so that they may ask him, “Who are you?” And he confessed, and did not deny, and he confessed, “I am not the Christ”. And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.” Therefore they said to him, “Who are you? so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? what do you say concerning yourself?” He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the desert: make straight the way of the Lord. As said the prophet Isaiah.” And those who were sent were from the Pharisees. And they asked him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize if you are neither Christ nor the prophet Elijah?” John answered them saying, “I baptize in water; but there has stood one in the midst of you, whom you know not. Of he who comes after me, I am not worthy to loosen the strap of his sandal.” These things happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
